We asked real estate agent Clara a few questions about herself, her connection to Hope Town, and what makes the Abaco lifestyle so special, from the close-knit community to the beauty of island living.
Here’s what she had to say.
When you're not working with clients, where can we usually find you (doing)?
When I'm not working with real estate clients, you'll usually find me welcoming guests to the island through my property management company.
What do you love most about calling Hope Town home?
I was born and raised in Hope Town, and what I love most is the strong community where neighbors look out for each other, and everyone takes pride in preserving the charm of the island.
What’s one thing about the Abacos that still amazes you?
The natural beauty of the islands and cays seen in the picturesque settlements, water colors, and pristine beaches.
What makes you different as an agent in the Abacos market?
I work closely with vacation homeowners through my property management company, so I understand both the lifestyle side of owning here and the practical side of maintaining and renting a home on the island.
What makes Hope Town, Elbow Cay, stand out from other islands in The Bahamas?
Hope Town is home to the historic Elbow Reef Lighthouse, one of the last manually operated kerosene-burning lighthouses in the world that is still maintained by a lighthouse keeper. It's a beautiful reminder of the island's history and one of the most iconic landmarks in The Bahamas.
What’s your favorite hidden gem in the Abacos that only locals really know about?
This is a tough question. . . . There is nothing that only locals know about here.
What is the community vibe like in Hope Town?
Vibrant and welcoming. Hope Town has a small-island charm where locals, second homeowners, and visitors all come together to create a warm and friendly community.
Why do so many vacation homeowners eventually become full-time residents?
The relaxed lifestyle, beautiful surroundings, and close-knit community make it easy to fall in love with island living.
What should someone prepare for before starting their property search in the Abacos?
It helps to understand the unique aspects of island living - things like transportation by boat or golf cart, maintenance considerations for coastal homes, and how property management works if you plan to rent your home. Working with a local agent can help guide you through those details.
If someone is deciding between the Abacos and another island, why would you encourage them to consider Hope Town?
Hope Town offers a rare combination of natural beauty, historic charm, and a strong sense of community. With its walkable village, colorful cottages, beautiful beaches, and boating lifestyle, it's a place that feels authentic and timeless.
