Holiday Decorating… Island Style

Christmas tree, island chic

There is something magical about celebrating Christmas in the islands. Maybe it is the warmth of the sunlight, the cool morning breeze on the patio, the faint sound of Junkanoo drifting through the air or simply the joy of not needing a coat. Whatever it is, Christmas in The Bahamas feels special. The best part is that transforming your home into Christmas in Paradise is easier than you think. Most of what you need is already around you, and a quick trip to Bahama Art and Handicraft or Nassau Glass will spark even more ideas.

Here are a few ways to bring the season to life, the island way.

Start with a Tropical Palette

Christmas interior

Forget the traditional reds and greens. The islands give you far better options, and many of them are already in your home. Think soft corals, ocean blues, seafoam, driftwood and bright conch shell pink. Add sun kissed metallics like brushed gold, champagne and copper and your space will feel like it has been dipped in warm light.

Whites and creams add a soft holiday glow, especially when paired with beautifully made local straw and rattan. And if you are like me and Christmas does not feel complete without red, add it. A small pop of red looks gorgeous against Caribbean teal.

Bring Nature Indoors

driftwood design

Nature is your best decorating partner! Palm fronds slide easily into wreaths on mantles and in vases. Driftwood becomes an instant centerpiece. Bowls filled with dried starfish, shells or seagrape leaves add texture without effort. Bougainvillea or hibiscus are joyful substitutes for the traditional poinsettias.

Rethink the Tree

Keep it classic or go full tropical masterpiece. The easiest way to transition to Christmas, follow the colour palette you already use in your home and switch out a few decorations. Seashells, raffia and sea glass add instant island flair, and conch shell ornaments are a local classic. A hand woven rattan angel topper is always charming.

If you want to go bold, try a a driftwood Christmas tree or a palm tree wrapped in warm white lights, which feels delightfully unapologetic.

Light It Like the Islands Do

Lighting makes everything feel magical. Warm white lights soften a room. Lanterns filled with battery candles and a sprinkle of ornaments look elegant without any effort. If you are short on time, shine a spotlight up into your palm trees and watch them glow like they were waiting for this moment all year. Hurricane vases filled with a little sand and a candle create the easiest beach inspired ambiance. The goal is a soft warm light that feels like the last few minutes of sunset.

Set a Holiday Table with Island Flair

Bahamas Handprints

The holiday table deserves its own moment. Bahama Handprints always has gorgeous prints that feel both festive and island inspired. Layer rattan or seagrass placemats with linen napkins tied with twine and a sprig of sea grapes. Add a runner in coral cream or aqua and place a few driftwood reindeers down the center. It feels festive but still invites guests to slip off their sandals and relax.

Don’t forget Junkanoo

Junkanoo

A little junkanoo bring instant joy. Jewel toned feathers, a couple of tiny cowbells or a framed print of a vibrant costume add energy to any room. Even colourful tassels used as curtain ties whisper a little Junkanoo magic.

Give the Outdoors a Moment

Christmas Wreath

We practically live outdoors, so the patio deserves equal attention. Hang string lights overhead, cluster candles on outdoor tables and add cushions in coral or seafoam. Wreaths on gates or along the railing can transform the space with almost no effort. Your patio should feel like it is politely announcing that island Christmas is best enjoyed with a breeze and a view.

Set the Mood with Island Scents

Biggity candles

Scent changes everything. Trade winter pine for Biggity Candle Company’s Junkanoo scent with notes of tobacco, teakwood and musk. Or go full tropical with their Pina Colada scent. The Wonderland scent with notes of Balsam, Cedar, Bergamot and Champagne is my personal favourite and their Sky Juice candle is practically holiday cheer in a bottle.

The key to island style is keeping things simple. Choose pieces that feel meaningful or natural. Avoid clutter. Let your spaces breathe. Holiday decorating here pairs beautifully with shorts and a cold drink. And finally, add something personal. A bowl of Christmas candies from Mortimer’s. A handwritten note for arriving guests. A tiny gesture that feels warm and sincere.

These little moments are what make an island Christmas unforgettable. If you ask me, that is the real magic of the season.
